Tooth extractions in South Calgary can be a smooth and pain-free process, especially when you know how to care for yourself afterward. Here are some helpful tips for tooth extraction aftercare.

Immediately After Your Surgery

Your dentist will provide gauze for you to bite down on after your surgery to help stop the bleeding. Freshen the gauze by changing it out as needed until the bleeding stops. You can use an ice pack to help reduce swelling after your procedure.

Avoid the extraction site for a while after surgery to form a protective blood clot and start the healing process. It's essential to keep that blood clot in place, so avoid things like smoking or drinking through a straw, which could dislodge the blood clot.

Plan on getting plenty of rest and avoid activities for at least 24 hours after your surgery. Stick to eating soft foods like soup, yogurt, or apple sauce for the first day or two after your surgery.

Over the Next Few Days

You can return to your regular brushing and flossing routine the day after surgery; just be careful to avoid your extraction site. You can also use your prescribed pain medication as needed over the next couple of days.

You can incorporate warm salt water rinses into your routine over the next few days to help reduce bacteria in your mouth and protect your blot clot. Mix a teaspoon of salt with half a cup of hot water until the salt dissolves. Swish the rinse around in your mouth for up to 30 seconds, and then gently spit it out. Use your rinse every few hours as needed.

It takes around seven to ten days for most patients to heal from a tooth extraction fully.
